Questions & Answers
Why are the club colours black and yellow?
BVB's original club colours were initially blue, white and red. It was only with the accession of the neighbouring sports clubs "Britannia", "Rhenania" and "Deutsche Flagge" that the colours were changed to black and yellow before the 1st World War.
What does Borussia mean?
""Borussia" is the Latin translation for Prussia. Many football clubs founded at the turn of the century bore club names such as "Westfalia", "Rhenenia" or "Germania" and thus expressed their connection to certain regions. In Dortmund, however, the name "Borussia" was chosen less for patriotic reasons than by chance. As the founders sat together in the back room of the "Wildschütz" and pondered the right name of the club, Franz Jacobi directed his gaze to the walls on which large pictures of the Dortmund brewery "Borussia" were attached. This brewery was located near Borsigplatz (Steigerstraße), and its beer was served in the "Wildschütz". Jacobi liked the name Borussia and named it quite spontaneously. It was universally accepted.
What does BVB actually mean?
BVB means Ballspielverein Borussia. The correct club name is "BV. Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund", where 09 refers to the year of foundation.
Many fans see another meaning in the abbreviation BVB and say it means "Borussen vom Borsigplatz", because the club was founded on 19.12.1909 at Borsigplatz, in the north of Dortmund, in the restaurant "Zum Wildschütz".
What sports does BVB offer besides football?
In addition to football, BVB runs the men's table tennis and women's handball departments. Blind football and goalball can also be played in Black & Yellow.
